Fiber Broadband Subscribers to Total 106 Million Worldwide in 2014: Report

During the year 2009, the number of fixed broadband subscribers rose to 422 million, achieving an increase of 9 percent from 2008.
ABI Research (News - Alert), a market intelligence company specializing in global connectivity and emerging technology reportedly predicted a rise in the number of fixed broadband users to 501 million at the end of 2014. The data said that broadband users linked through fiber will increase from the current 44 million to 106 million through the period.
ABI Research industry analyst Serene (News - Alert) Fong said that, “Broadband penetration continues to increase since more service providers are offering triple-play services and driving down access prices.”
The report while segregating the users of three broadband technologies has reportedly quoted that 65 percent of fixed broadband clients located globally have opted for DSL, 25 percent opted for cable and 11 percent chose fiber broadband services. According to the current trend there is a spurt in the users of fiber broadband subscribers showing an annual increase of 20 percent from 2008 to 2014.
“File sharing, music downloads, IPTV (News - Alert), online gaming and video conferencing are all acting to increase the user demand for high speed Internet,” Khin Sandi Lynn, research associate said. “The number of fiber broadband subscribers is increasing with growing popularity of these services.”
The research findings indicate that nearly 84 percent of the fiber broadband users are located in Asia-Pacific region followed by North America. In Asia-Pacific region South Korea and Japan has the highest number of fiber broadband users. NTT (News - Alert) is found to be the largest fiber broadband service provider with 12 million plus subscribers.
The report indicated low penetration of fiber broadband users in Western Europe compared to North America and Asia Pacific.
